365 Days of Danvers:8

In Memory of Karen Martin.
Karen Martin, 40, was working as the head flight attendant on American Airlines Flight 11 the morning of the Sept. 11 attacks. She was stabbed struggling with the terrorists, according to various reports. The plane was the first one to be flown into one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Karen has not been forgotten in Danvers, where she graduated from Danvers High and later lived in town.
Over the past 10 years, a fund set up in the name of flight attendant Karen Martin — one of the first victims of 9/11 — has donated nearly $41,000 to children's causes on the North Shore.
One of the fund's first donations was a $2,500 gift to the library, which used the money to add books to its children's collection and do some minor repair work to the Children's Room, where a rocking chair has a plaque bearing Martin's name.
Some of Martin's friends also placed a granite bench outside the library on Sylvan Street in Martin's memory.
